Cradle Mountain is part of Tasmania's World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and offers spectacular scenery of rugged mountains, tree-filled gorges, glacial lakes, rainforests and moorlands.
Take one of the many short walks on the Dove Lake Loop Track, the Visitor Centre Rainforest Walk, Weindorfers Forest Walk or the Enchanted Walk through the ever-changing vegetation of the shores and mountainside to gain a full appreciation of the magic of this area.
Nestled among the myrtles and King Billy pines at Cradle Valley, Waldheim Chalet, meaning "forest home", was built in 1912 when Gustav & Kate Wiendorfer fell in love with the area.
Located just inside the national park entrance, this centre provides visitors with a wide range of services that includes informative displays, an art gallery, videos and a welcoming log fire! Information officers provide advice on walks and activities. Open daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, a visit to the centre as soon as you arrive is recommended and will help you to make the most out of your stay.
A shuttle bus service aimed at protecting the important values of the World Heritage Area operates between the Transit Terminal at the former airstrip to Dove Lake.
Picnic shelters with electric barbecues are found adjacent to the visitor centre and there are picnic tables close to Waldheim. Toilets are located at the visitor centre, Waldheim and Dove Lake and all of these are wheelchair accessible.
